Albany High students voted earlier this week for the students to be named as 2019 Homecoming King and Queen.

Members of each of the four classes at AHS have selected nominees for king and queen from among the seniors, all of whom will be presented during the Sept. 27 halftime ceremony.

The juniors, sophomores, and freshmen have each selected their class prince and princess, and honorees from several other organizations will also be in the homecoming court.

AHS Royalty

Candidates for king and queen selected by the seniors are Tyler Beard and Jaleigh Morales. Nominees named by the junior class are Conner Clark and Taylor Scott, while the sophomores chose Max Balliew and Julia Bowman. The freshmen’s candidates for the honor are Uriel Camacho and Gracie LeMay.

All king and queen nominees are seniors, and the winners will be selected by the entire student body.

Princes and princesses were chosen for each of the other high school classes.

Junior honorees are Liam Stunkard and Landree Connally, while the sophomores elected Jaheim Newton and Caitlan Lee. Samuel Rosas and Chloe Anderson are the homecoming royalty for the freshman class.

Other honorees selected include FFA Sweetheart Mady Connally and FFA Beau Kasey Cauble, Band Sweetheart Clara Holson and Beau Malachi Gueldner, and Football Sweetheart Addison Asher and Escort Gregori Mikeska.

The 2019 AHS homecoming week is jam-packed with activities as Albany High School students begin to celebrate the Sept. 27 “Iconic Television Shows” homecoming.

Float building

The classes at the secondary school can begin constructing their homecoming parade floats this Saturday, Sept. 21, and can spend up to $200, according to secondary principal Edward Morales.

Each high school class will decorate a float according to the selected theme of “Iconic Television Shows.” The two junior high classes will work together on one float.

The senior class members selected Sponge Bob for their entry.

Juniors chose the sitcom Friends for their float.

The Office will be constructed by the sophomore class.

The freshmen decided on That ’70s Show.

The junior high float theme is Looney Tunes

Street Painting

Sunday, Sept. 22 various groups will bring paint and rollers to liven up the streets in Albany.

“Parents of the volleyball players, cheerleaders, football players, and cross country runners are asked to meet at the high school gym parking lot at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday evening,” said Albany Athletic Boosters Club secretary Tisha Wilkins. “Once we finish at the school, the football parents will move to Main Street. We’ll also be putting up streamers at some point in time.”

Painting of Main Street is tentatively scheduled for 8:00 p.m.

For safety reasons Main Street is shut down during the painting, and approval for that is expected but was not yet officially confirmed by law enforcement as of press time.

“We expect the city officials will have Main Street closed from 8:00 p.m. until midnight so the paint has time to dry,” Wilkins said. “We’ve asked them to close Main Street during that time, but they have to get approval from the state before they can do that.”

Friday Activities

Kicking off the Friday activities is the traditional homecoming pep rally at 8:45 a.m. in the AHS gym, with elementary students planning to attend.

Although pep rallies are typically held in the afternoons, the homecoming pep rally was moved to a morning time slot a couple of years ago to decrease scheduling conflicts with other homecoming activities and to make it easier for Nancy Smith Elementary students to attend.

The parade will follow at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27.

“Anyone interested in participating in the parade can contact the high school office,” Morales said. “We will line up at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium parking lot.”

The parade will include homecoming royalty riding in cars, floats representing the classes, as well as the AHS band.

Kickoff on Faith Field at Robert Nail Stadium is expected to take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday night.

Homecoming royalty will be presented at half-time.

Fifth Quarter

After the homecoming game on Sept. 27 against Peaster, the Albany Church of Christ, Maranatha Fellowship, and Jesus of Nazareth Catholic Church will team up to host Fifth Quarter. The after game fellowship will take place at The Feed Store.
