Moran’s Johnnie Hise received the District 7 Gold Star Award on Oct. 25 at the district banquet at the Bill Franklin Center in Coleman.

The Gold Star Award is the highest achievement award given by the Texas 4-H Youth Development program through the county 4-H program. The Texas 4-H Gold Star Award can only be awarded once in a member’s 4-H career.

“Gold Star is awarded differently for each county or district,” Shackelford County extension agent Kelsey Bell said. “Our district decided to award it at the district banquet, but we have given it at a county banquet in the past.”

The Gold Star Award was first presented in 1933. The award was prompted by an effort to recognize the people who did the work rather than county agents, according to the Texas 4-H website.

Recipients must be at least in ninth grade and in their third year of 4-H membership. The 4-H member must have completed projects in three or more different project areas, submitted appropriate record forms, and participated in one or more activities in at least three areas such as projects, leadership experience, competitive events, citizenship activities, and camps.

Another eligibility requirement is the submission of a 4-H recordbook for the year the candidate is to be considered for the award.

Hise, a senior at Moran High School, has competed in archery, cooking, and sewing. In addition to teaching sewing to younger 4-Hers, she is serving as president of Shackelford County 4-H this year.
