High winds recorded

Albany and Shackelford County avoided the large hail that a Monday afternoon thunder storm dumpedon other parts of the Big Country, but there were a few unofficial reports of damage caused by straight-line winds.

In fact, even though the sheriff’s office didn’t receive any calls about the storm, Albany ended up at the top of the list for the highest wind gust caused by the storm, which moved through Texas and Oklahoma on up to Kansas and Missouri.

The West Texas Mesonet weather site just east of Albany recorded a gust of 88 miles per hour at 4:30 p.m. Monday, according to Mike Castillo of the National Weather Service office in San Angelo.

The next highest report from that same storm was 72 MPH in Dutzow, Missouri. There was also a gust of 71 MPH at Bangs, Texas.

A“Top Wind Report” graphic was seen by many local residents on Fox News Tuesday morning.

The Big Country communities of Hawley and Nugent had confirmed hail as large as 2.75 inches, which is classified as baseball size, Castillo said.

In Albany, only pea-size and marble-size hail was reported.

Officially, .32-inch of rain was received in town, although are sident near the Mesonet site caught .70-inch.

Castillo said that as of Tuesday afternoon, the NWD had not documented any accounts of tornadoes during Monday’s thunderstorm.

There was reportedly a roof ripped off a home in Shackel ford County, but the News had been unable to verify that as of press time.
