Guy Caldwell made his living as a rancher, but serving his alma mater – Hardin-Simmons – was a key part of his life.

The former Albany resident, who died in 1987, was remembered by the institution earlier this month with induction into HSU’s Hall of Leaders. Several family members, including his son Lee Caldwell, attended the ceremony.

“Guy Caldwell loved Hardin-Simmons and supported it faithfully throughout his life,” grandson Wade Caldwell of San Antonio said. “We’re pleased to see HSU recognize him, especially this many years after his death. It was really a touching gesture by the university.”

Established in 2001, the Hardin-Simmons University Hall of Leaders provides for permanent recognition of graduates, former students, and former employees who have distinguished records of achievement and proven themselves as men and women of good character. It is located in the Elwin L. Skiles Social Science Building on the first-floor circular corridor.

Guy Caldwell was born in Breckenridge in 1904. When he graduated college in 1927, the school was still known as Simmons University. His support of the institution included serving on the Board of Trustees.

In 1958, he received the John J. Keeter, Jr. Alumni Service Award, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an HSU graduate. In 1981, Guy and his wife, Jeanette, were the first couple to jointly receive HSU’s Distinguished Alumni Award. At the time of his death, he was a member of the HSU Board of Development and Academic Foundation.

Guy Caldwell was the second of four generations of the Caldwell family involved with HSU, following in his father’s footsteps. In addition, Wade Caldwell’s sister, Marilyn, and a cousin, also named Guy Caldwell, graduated from HSU.
