Good crowds view 55 classic entries in reinstated car show

Despite cooler temperatures, sunshine on Saturday morning drew a good crowd for the 14th annual Albany Classic Car Show.

Organizer Robert Snyder said the show ended up with 55 entries, which is less than usual, but probably worked well considering the weather.

“We typically like to have around 75 to 100 cars in the show,” said Snyder. “Due to all of the rain and street conditions, having more vehicles might have been a problem.”

The event began with the traditional Friday night in-town cruise and was followed by the burnout.

Saturday morning registration kicked off at 8:00 a.m. and was accompanied by breakfast served to the crowd by the Albany Chamber of Commerce at the Bank Park.

The show was open to all classics, antiques, hot rods, customs, and trucks with all participants receiving a goodie bag from Eagle Auto Parts.

“There were a lot of people already in town for the Sampler, plus our regular visitors to the car show,” Snyder said. “The people that were at the show didn’t complain about the weather or the wind; they just enjoyed the show.”

He thanked everyone who helped with the event.

“There are so many people who help pull this show off, from the ladies who register entries to the guys who help with the burnout and the actual day of the show including judging, parking, awarding trophies, set-up, and clean up,” he said. “I also want to thank Jody at Eagle Auto Parts, King & Robertson Insurance Agency for donating groceries for the breakfast, and the Chamber for cooking and serving the meal.”

He also mentioned City of Albany employees who helped prepare the area and fire department volunteers who stood by during the burnout.

Special Awards

One change this year involved the “Best of Show” award which was given  to a car and a truck instead of just one vehicle.

“We decided to split this category into two separate awards since we no longer have a truck show,” said Snyder.

All judging for the show  is done by committee members, with the exception of the People’s Choice award for car and truck, which is done by the actual show participants.

Named “Best of Show – Car” by the judges was a 1961 Chevrolet Bubble Top Impala owned by Rick Duffin of Burleson.

“Best of Show – Truck” was awarded to a 1949 Ford F100 pickup owned by Mark Odom of Abilene.

Dylan Rhodes of Clyde won “Best Paint” with his 1964 Corvette.

“Best Engine” went to Jack Jenkins of Breckenridge for his 1950 Chevrolet Fleetline.

Bryan Woodward, also of Breckenridge, took home  the prize for “Best Interior” in his 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle.

“First National Bank of Albany Pick” was awarded to Charlie Core of Abilene for his 1966 Austin Healy Sport.

Martin Thomas of Dallas won the Flying A Museum Pick” with his 1931 Ford A-400 Convertible.

The “Wayne and Jane Award” given in memory of Wayne Burrow who helped Snyder start the car show, went to Ashleigh Templin of Abilene for her 1958 Mercury Montclair.

Bobby Darnell of Iowa won a $50 gas card for “Farthest Distance” traveled to the show.

The “People’s Choice – Car” award was given to a 1949 Mercury Woody Wagon entered by Jim and Linda Brown of Boyd.

The “People’s Choice – Truck” award went to Deidra and Clifton Day of Weatherford for their 1936 Ford pickup.

Both winners of the “People’s Choice” awards received $150 each.

Special Fundraiser

A 50/50 fundraiser was held during the car show with proceeds going to Albany resident Kristi Brooker who is fighting breast cancer.

Snyder said that the fundraiser gave the show organizers $200 to donate to Brooker.

In addition, Darnell, the Browns, and the Days all donated their prize money back to the fundraiser which allowed show organizers to gift Brooker with $550.

Snyder summed up the successful show by looking to the future.

“Hopefully, now that we have this past year behind us, we will continue to get back to normal,” he said. “And next year we can get back to a larger scale show and keep improving.”
