Garcia hits McM homer

Albany High 2018 graduate Reyna Garcia got her first hit as a college softball player just a couple of weeks ago, and it was one that she will probably always remember.

It was not Garcia’s first time at the plate as a member of the War Hawks. The freshman had struck out a couple of times earlier this season and had scored a run back in February after taking four balls from an Austin College pitcher.

But the hit during the March 15 game with Concordia was special.

“My first hit was for a home run!” Garcia said. “Everyone on my team was really excited.”

The War Hawks ended up losing the game in spite of Garcia driving in two RBI’s and scoring on her home run, but the Albany alumni hit a single and scored a run to help the War Hawks overcome Concordia the following day. Garcia added another single last Friday to improve her batting average to 0.250.

“It’s a lot different playing at the college level,” said Garcia. “Everyone is good, and it’s faster paced. You have to be at your best all the time.”

Garcia said that she has been adjusting to a new position.

“In high school, I pitched, and also played first base and third base, but at McMurry they have me playing shortstop, and occasionally I’ve come in as a pinch hitter,” she said.

Daughter of Kristen and Jamie Garcia,  Reyna is an accounting major.
