A fundraising drive to provide a new section to the veterans monument located at the Shackelford County Courthouse is kicking off this month.

Organizer Mary Kay O’Connor said a total of $4,135 is needed to provide the addition to the monument, which now lists more than 500 names of Shackelford County veterans.

“Hopefully, people will make donations to the fund,” O’Connor said. “If we need to have a fundraiser like a meal, maybe I can find some help to do that.”

The monument originally consisted of one eight-foot-by-three-and-a-half-foot segment erected at the Albany Cemetery and dedicated on Memorial Day 1961.

In 2003, the monument was moved to the Courthouse Square and two additions were added, giving room for more names.

The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW, and DAR have helped raise funds through the years.

O’Connor said the fourth piece will be the same size as the two added in 2003 and  will be placed on the left side of the structure.

Donations can be sent to O’Connor at 441 S. 3rd St. Albany TX 76430. More information is available by calling 325-660-2498.
