Planning continues for the Shackelford County livestock show with fundraisers underway and a work day at the county show barn scheduled.

The show will be held Jan 20-22.

Bronco Askew, president of the Shackelford Youth and Livestock Association, said a finance committee meeting on Monday, Jan. 10, is the next step.

“We’re going to try to finalize getting the monies appropriated,” he said. “We’ve sent out fundraising letters, and now everybody’s noses are to the grindstone getting ready.”

Among the fundraising projects are raffles for a 12-gauge shotgun and a processed hog that will be provided by Deep Creek Trading Post of Moran.

Tickets can be purchased from any Shackelford County ag student, FFA member, or 4-H member.

Winners will be drawn before the show sale begins on Saturday, Jan. 22.

Jan. 15 Workday

Askew said all exhibitors are encouraged to participate in the workday, which will start at 8:00 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15.

“The show’s for them, so we’d like to see them be there to help get the barn ready,” he said. “We should be able to get it done in a couple of hours.”

Albany FFA advisor Chris Beard said exhibitors should bring tools such as brooms, shovels, and rakes.

“If everyone shows up and helps, it will not take long at all to clean the ring, bleachers, pens, bathrooms, and the overall area,” Beard said.

Askew said much work has been done at the facility or is nearing completion.

“We’ve been working on the concession stand and a few other areas,” he said. “We’re trying to get the facility updated. We’ve been working pretty hard to get some improvements put in.”

Beard said his students will be washing, weighing, and exercising their animals and making sure the animals stay healthy in the upcoming weeks.

Show Schedule

Weigh-in for animals will begin at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, with swine, sheep, and goats. Poultry and rabbit weigh-in will start at 3:00 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, with cattle weighed in starting at 7:00 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 22.

Exhibiting will start at 8:00 a.m., Friday, Jan. 21 with swine, followed by goats and sheep. Cattle will be shown at 8:00 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, followed by poultry and rabbits.

Showmanship competition in each category will be held after the animal judging.
