Shackelford County sheriff’s department deputy Quinton Lee is recovering from emergency surgery for a ruptured appendix and his family, friends, and co-workers have organized fundraisers to help him and his family get back on their feet.

Lee’s niece Khloe New has opened a Facebook fundraiser for Lee at facebook.com/donate/337602353526665/, and sheriff Edward Miller said that a fundraiser has also been organized at bluefamilyfund.com.

“Quinton has medical insurance through the county, but we want to help them cover the medical expenses and co-pays that the insurance does not cover,” said Miller, “Those can add up fast! For example, he still has an open wound and the co-pay is over $100 each time the dressing needs to be changed.”

Lee was in the hospital for five days after the surgery, and he will not be able to return to work for another six weeks, according to New.

Miller said that in addition to the added medical expenses, the family’s income will also be lower than normal while Lee is recovering.

“Quinton normally works at a part-time hourly job during his days off from the sheriff’s department,” said Miller. “He and his wife have three children, and they will be missing that paycheck.”

A fundraiser luncheon was held at the Shackelford County Law Enforcement Center on Friday, June 7, and the freshly grilled hamburgers sold out in less than two hours.

Miller said that Lee is a good employee, and the sheriff was glad to see the overwhelming support from the community.

“Talk about a dedicated fellow, apparently he was working in a lot of pain for a week before he finally went to see a doctor,” Miller said. “They immediately took him to emergency surgery! The doctors said that his appendix looked like it must have ruptured around six days before he came in.”
