Fort Griffin's Living History Days Return
Fort Griffin State Historic Site will host its annual Living History Days this Friday and Saturday, Oct. 10–11, offering visitors an immersive look at life on the Texas frontier through a full slate of historical demonstrations, live performances, and special programming.
The event will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. both days at the historic site north of Albany and will feature costumed interpreters, military reenactments, and hands-on exhibits that bring the late 1800s to life. The program is designed to offer both educational opportunities and family-friendly entertainment.
Demonstrations will include longhorn cattle drives, authentic chuckwagons, and black powder artillery salutes. Representatives of the U.S. Army Camel Corps will also be on site, offering a rare look at the historic experiment that briefly brought camels to the American military frontier. Additional stations will highlight historic trades, frontier games, and crafts, many of which are interactive for younger visitors.
Music and storytelling will be a central part of the weekend, with scheduled performances from several well-known western artists. Devon Dawson, who provided the voice of Jesse the Yodeling Cowgirl in Toy Story 2, will headline the music lineup. She will be joined by cowboy poet Teresa Burleson, fiddler Michelle Kuhlman, and singer-songwriter Stan Mahler, all of whom will perform throughout the day.
Admission to Living History Days is $10 for adults. Children are admitted free, and the event remains free of charge for public and homeschool groups, continuing the site’s educational mission.
A new addition to the weekend is the Texas Forts Trail Wine Festival, scheduled to take place on Saturday during the event. Regional wineries will offer tastings and bottles for sale in a separate area of the grounds. Wine tasting tickets can be purchased in advance online.
Fort Griffin staff encourage attendees to wear comfortable shoes and bring sun protection, as much of the event takes place outdoors. Food and drink vendors will also be available on site.
