Flags to fly next Friday

Albany News

Local businesses and residents are encouraged to join with patriots across the United States next Friday, June 14 in the annual cele-bration of Flag Day.

Individuals and business owners who have their own flags are asked to put them up for the day, except in case of inclement weather.

Those who don’t have their own banners can contact the Albany Lions Club.

The organization’s “Flags Across Albany” project honors the American heritage and military heroes who served this country, as well as serving as a fundraiser.

For an annual contribution of $25 per flag, the Albany Lions Club will display a nylon 3’x5’ American flag in front of any Albany home or business, and participants will be billed annually to renew the service.

The flags are put up on Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day, Labor Day, and Presidents Day, according to club secretary/treasurer Janna Ledbetter.

Lions Club members drive rebar into the ground to support the conduit pole and flag for the holiday, and afterwards, they completely remove the rebar, pole, and flag until the next occasion.

The flags are stored between holidays to keep them clean and dry.

Proceeds from the flag program help support -Lions charitable programs.

“We really appreciate Albany residents for supporting us and this program,” said Ledbetter, “This project does help us to help others, but the main purpose is to honor our nation.”

Flags for Albany homes and businesses can be ordered by contacting any Lions Club member, or by sending a check for $25 with “flag” written on the check to the Albany Lions Club, P.O. Box 2562, Albany TX 76430.
