Flags to fly on Monday

Local businesses and residents are encouraged to join with patriots across the United States next Monday, June 14 in the annual celebration of Flag Day.

Individuals and business owners who have their own flags are asked to put them up for the day, except in case of inclement weather.

Typically, flags are raised by the Lions Club  on Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day, Labor Day, and Presidents Day, according to club secretary/treasurer Janna Ledbetter, but the club has had to stop due to the need of additional manpower to get the poles out on display.

“In the past, Lions Club members drove rebar into the ground to support the conduit pole and flag for the holiday,” said Ledbetter. “Afterwards, they completely removed the rebar, pole, and flag until the next occasion.”

The Lions Club would love to bring back the “Flags Across Albany” program that honors the American heritage and the military heroes who served this country, as well as serving as a fundraiser for the organization.

“We just really need some new young members to help us with some of these events,” said Ledbetter.

The Lions Club recently planned the Memorial Day remembrance and member Sandi Conway encouraged local citizens to get involved with the organization.

Conway also said she or any other Lions Club member can be contacted if someone is interested in joining the organization.

“The Lions Club is a great organization,” she said. “We do many things for the community and the school children.
