Firemen to teach safety rules

Members of the Albany Volunteer Fire Department will help educate local school children about fire safety this Friday, Oct. 19.

Local firemen will make a presentation at the Albany elementary campus on Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. to speak with the kindergarten through sixth graders, according to fire chief Kyle Tischler.

A presentation for the Headstart and pre-K kids will also take place, but was not yet scheduled as of press time.

Ember, the chief’s fire dog, is expected to be on hand to greet the students.

“She’s getting old, but she still loves to see all those kids,” Tischler said. “And we will be taking a couple of trucks, including the new one, Engine 3, to each of the fire prevention activities we attend.”

Last week was National Fire Safety Week, and this year’s theme is “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware – fire can happen anywhere.”

“We will be emphasizing the importance of smoke detectors and that fires can happen anywhere,” Tischler said. “This will include talking about camping fires, kitchen fires, and using candles properly. All of these are things that many children take part in.”

The AVFD members will also visit the Moran school children on Friday, and expect to arrive at the MISD campus at 12:15 p.m.

“Our department believes that if we can prevent just one injury or fatality, it is well worth the time and money spent for this fire prevention program,” said the chief.
