Filing period opens for local elections
By Melinda L. Lucas
The filing period for local elections opened Wednesday for several entities such as the school board, city council, and hospital board and will continue until Friday, Feb. 14.
The election date set by the state for all local elections is Saturday, May 3.
Candidates have the 30-day filing period to sign up for a spot on one of the local boards or councils.
There is no filing fee for the local races, although one county-wide position does require prospective candidates to submit a petition signed by a minimum of 10 registered voters in order to enter the race.
Albany City Council
According to City Hall, two seats on the council expire this year currently held by Don Taggart and Lynsi Musselman, along with mayor Susan Montgomery. Each of the positions is for a two-year term of office.
Applications are available at Albany City Hall.
The candidates receiving the most votes will win the positions in the at-large election for the council positions, while the mayoral seat is voted on separately.
Anyone seeking additional information can contact City Hall at 325-762-3133.
Albany ISD
Board of Trustees
Albany ISD voters will be electing three trustees for three-year seats on the board this year.
Candidates for the AISD election must file for specific seats on the board and must live within the boundaries of the school district.

Applications to file for the election are available at the superintendent’s office in person at 501 E. S. 1st Street, by emailing Lynsi Musselman at lmusselman@albany.esc14.net or by faxing 325-762-3876.
Hospital Board
The Shackelford County Hospital District’s board has three two-year terms expiring this spring including Jo Ann Estridge and Mike Folsom, as well as Michelle Alexander, who was appointed and must run for a full term in order to keep her seat.
Election information and applications are available at the district’s office in the EMS building. Contact Regina Whitt for more information at 325-762-3313.
Hospital board candidates must have their application petitions signed by 10 registered Shackelford County voters in order to file.
“We usually recommend getting extra signatures in case someone isn’t a currently registered voter,” Whitt said.
Moran City Council
The Moran city council will fill two at-large positions for two-year terms on the council this spring, as well as the mayor’s seat.
Current council members whose terms are expiring are Christal Herrell and Tyler Kinman. The mayor is Tyler George.
