The Albany Independent School District and the Shackelford County hospital district will both hold elections on May 2, as will the Moran city council.
The other three local governing bodies – Albany city council, Moran school board, and Fort Griffin SUD board, do not have any contested races and are expected to cancel their elections.
Fourteen new candidates joined various local races before last week’s Friday cut-off.
Paul Johnston is the newest candidate for a seat on the Albany school board. He filed for Place 2.
Incumbents Myra Hise and John Ayers, along with newcomer John Peterson, filed for the local hospital board.
Incumbents Dora Cook Leonard, Tyler George, and Cindy Husky filed to return to the Moran city council. Joining them in the race are Carlton Edgar, Christal Herrell, and John Steninger.
Gary Roan will return to the Moran school board.
John Adams, Robert Montgomery, and Jim Blancq will return as Fort Griffin SUD directors.
Albany City Council
Mayor pro tem Susan Montgomery is uncontested for the remaining one year of a two-year term for Albany mayor.
James Waters and Lester Galbreath will return to their spots on the council.
Ragan Riley will join them, filling the seat vacated by Montgomery.
Council members serve two-year at-large positions.
AISD Trustees
Johnston and incumbent Ginny Ivy have both filed for the Place 2 position on the local school board.
Robert Montgomery is unopposed for returning to the Place 1 seat.
Albany school board members serve three-year terms.
Hospital Board
Five candidates have filed for the four available at-large seats on the Shackelford County hospital board.
On the May 2 ballot will be incumbents Janna Ledbetter, Chris Beard, Hise, and Ayers, along with newcomer Peterson.
Directors on the hospital board serve two-year terms.
Moran City Council
According to Moran administrative assistant Teresa King, there are four two-year seats available on the Moran city council this election.
Seeking a place on the council are incumbents Huskey, George, and Leonard. Also running for positions are Steninger, Herrell, and Edgar.
Council members serve two-year terms.
MISD Trustees
Incumbent Roan filed for one of the two available seats on the Moran school board.
No one applied for the other seat, which is currently held by James Shelton.
“Our school board will vote to either fill James Shelton’s position once it expires, leave it vacant, or order a special election to fill the position,” said MISD superintendent Danny Freeman. “Our May election will be cancelled.”
School board trustees serve three-year terms.
Fort Griffin SUD
Montgomery, Adams, and Blancq will return to their seats on the Fort Griffin Special Utility District board.
Directors on the local SUD serve three-year terms.
