Albany News

The Albany Independent School District and the City of Albany will both hold elections on May 4, while the other three local governing bodies, the Shackelford County hospital district, the Moran city council, and the Moran school board do not have any contested races and are expected to cancel their elections.

Six new candidates joined various local races before last week’s  5:00 p.m. Friday cut-off.

Don Taggart is the newest candidate for a seat on the Albany city council.

Rodney Alexander filed to return as mayor of Albany.

Kim Neece joined the race for Place 7 on the Albany school board, and Leslie Belcher turned in paperwork to return to her seat on the hospital board.

Incumbents Stanley Reeves and Lisa McFerrin filed for Moran city council.

Albany City Council

Taggart, Dewey Knight, Ragan Riley, and incumbent Carolyn Waller are running for the two available seats on the Albany city council.

Alexander is unopposed to continue his role as mayor.

Council members, including the mayor’s office, are two-year at-large positions.

AISD Trustees

Amanda Tabor and incumbent Kelly Head have both filed for the Place 5 position on the local school board.

Joe Tidwell is unopposed for Place 6.

Neece, Stephen Kayga, Clint Chapman, Dinty Bowman, and Mike Bean are all running for Place 7.

According to local policy, “a candidate must receive more votes than any other candidate” to win the seat, so unless there is an actual tie among the top vote-getters, there will be no run-off election.

Albany school board members serve three-year terms.

Hospital Board

The three available spots on the Shackelford County hospital board will be filled by the three candidates that filed for the two-year seats.

Mike Folsom will join incumbents Jo Ann Estridge and Belcher on the hospital board.

Moran City Council

The three current seat holders on Moran’s city council were unopposed.

Steve Taggart will return as mayor. Reeves and McFerrin will continue to serve on the city council for another two years.

MISD Trustees

Incumbents Sam Snyder and Alice Branham were uncontested in their races for the two available seats on the Moran school board.

School board trustees serve three-year terms.

“With no write-in candidates, they win the election unopposed, and we will file an order to cancel the election,” said MISD superintendent Danny Freeman.
