Fiber internet project underway in Albany
Construction of the new Vero fiber internet system in Albany began a little over a month ago and is expected to continue for about two more months, according to city employee Brian Holson.
Vero representatives said service will be activated in stages as construction progresses, rather than all at once across the community. Construction is being completed in “zones,” each serving roughly 300 to 400 homes, allowing service to begin in each area as it is finished. The first zone is expected to go live in early April, with additional zones coming online over the following two months.
The project has involved trenching and underground work throughout the community as crews install fiber lines designed to provide high-speed internet service. During the process, contractors have encountered a few issues with existing utilities, including some water and gas lines. Holson noted that minor problems are typically repaired by the contractor, while larger issues requiring additional work are handled with assistance from the City of Albany.
Some street damage has also occurred in areas where lines are being installed. Holson said the company has indicated that streets will be repaired once the project is complete and should be restored to conditions similar to what they were before construction began. In some locations, additional asphalt work may be needed as crews return to finish repairs.
Vero also stated that its fiber network will provide symmetrical internet service, meaning equal upload and download speeds, with pricing and service details available on its website at https://www.verofiber.com/fiberhoods/albany.
