The Parliamentary Procedure team of the Albany FCCLA Chapter that took first place at the State Leadership Conference in Dallas recently, also won $1,000 scholarships from Texas Tech University.

The team competed in the Level I division for seventh and eighth graders, taking the top place in the state and earning a trip to the National Leadership Conference in San Diego in June.

FCCLA sponsor Jennifer Marshall explained that students earning first place in Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) events at the state level earned the scholarships from Texas Tech’s College of Human Sciences.

She confirmed that the seven individual scholarships will be held at the university until the junior high students graduate.

“I wasn’t sure that it would include Level 1 or junior high students,” she said. “But Tech has been expanding their scholarship program.”

She said that Tech has offered scholarship to winners in the culinary divisions in the past, but the university is now expanding in the STAR events.

The team conducted a 20-minute meeting using a preset agenda of business, as well as  a written test. Competing on the team were Mimi Ivy – president, Caroline Chapman – secretary, Tristan Howe – treasurer, and other members Lane Helle, Madison Parrott, Woods Peterson, and Braylee Clark.

The top two entries in each contest at the state conference advances to the national conference on June 29 through July 3 at San Diego, CA.

Albany also had some students compete in the online contests being selected to advance directly to the national conference; however, those events fall in a different category were not eligible to win scholarships.
