Several members of the newly reinstated Albany FCCLA Chapter competed at the Regional Leadership Conference in Waco last week, with all 10 high school and junior high students who attended earning one of the top three places to advance to the state conference in April.

The Level 1 Parliamentarian Procedure team won second place in their contest, which included conducting a 20-minute meeting using a preset agenda of business and a written test. Competing on the team were president Mimi Ivy, secretary Caroline Chapman, treasurer Tristan Howe, and other members Lane Helle, Madison Parrott, Woods Peterson, and Braylee Clark.

Level 1 includes students in seventh and eighth grade, while Level 2 is for high school freshmen and sophomores. Junior and senior students compete in Level 3.

Freshman Myleigh Leveridge placed third in the job interview competition, while a community service project by juniors Mayson Garcia and Ashley Richards received third place in Level 3. The duo created “We Care” packages to be distributed to homebound senior citizens locally.

The top five places in each contest qualify to advance to the state conference to be held in Dallas on April 7-8. There are a total of five regions across the state.

“Our goal this year was to qualify for state,” FCCLA sponsor Jennifer Marshall said. “We exceeded that with each of our teams placing third or higher.”

Marshall, who is new to AHS this school year, brought a history of success with her from Brady where she taught for a number of years.

“I thought our students represented Albany very well and looked so nice too,” she said. “The Academic Booster Club provided funds to purchase an official FCCLA red blazer for each student who attended and also helped cover the entry fees.”

The top two entries in each contest at the state conference will advance to the national conference on June 29 through July 3 at San Diego, California.

Albany had an active Family, Career and Community Leaders of America chapter several years ago.
