Several members of the Albany FCCLA chapter will compete at the State Leadership Conference in Dallas set for March 31 through April 2.

Two of the parliamentary procedure teams placed at the regional conference to qualify for the state meet, and two two-person projects also advanced.

In addition, one of the chapter’s online contests has advanced straight to the national conference to be held in Denver in July.

Juniors Luke Marshall and Houston Heatly placed in the top 15 in the nation in the Digital Stories for Change category for a video pertaining to the amount of screen time people spend on electronic devices and its possible negative effects.

The pair will present their video at the national convention. They took second nationwide last year in the same category for a video on the stigma of mental health issue among students.

“They researched the effects of excessive viewing and the physical, social, and emotional effects that it can have.” FCCLA sponsor Jennifer Marshall said.

Lanxton Viertel and Zane Waggoner also submitted an online project in the instructional video category on the topic of the role of students in school safety.

“Lanxton and Zane received high marks but didn’t make the top 15 in order to present their project at Denver,” the sponsor said. “I was surprised, because their content was really good. I think there was a lot more competition this year.”

The pair qualified to present at national contest last year in the same category.
