FCA to host special events

The Big Country chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes typically hosts its annual Weekend of Champions over full weekends each January. 

This year, due to COVID concerns, the Weekend of Champions camps will be one day only events with the Girls Weekend scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 23 from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Solid Rock Christian Camp in Eastland. 

The Boys Weekend is scheduled for the following Saturday, Jan. 30 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Beltway South in Abilene. 

FCA Big Country East representative Paul Johnston would like to see all interested high school youth attend.

“God changes lives at these events,” said Johnston. “If you are in high school, you should come. If you know a high schooler, you should send them.”

The hope of FCA is to present high school students with what it looks like to pursue godliness in various aspects of their lives as young men and women. 

Johnston added that flyers with all of the information about the camps have been posted at area high schools.

“The Weekend of Champions is the FCA version of a Disciple Now weekend,” Johnston said. “But remember that it is not exclusively for athletes. The boys camp will be led by an all-male staff, and the girls camp will have all women ministering to the young ladies.”

There is a cost to attend the event with the boys event costing $40 and the girls event costing $65, but Johnston refuses to let money keep a student from attending. 

“The funds are there if a student wants to attend and isn’t able to pay,” said Johnston. “When a student goes to register, all they need to do is click the option for a scholarship and their fee will be covered.” 

The fee covers the costs of giveaways and other expenses, such as facility rentals, while the food typically is donated by local restaurants. 

“We are going to have great food and giveaways at both events,” said Johnston. “But the most important thing we will offer is adults ministering to the kids on how to make Godly decisions.”

Albany volunteer Rhonda Vickers is selling raffle tickets to raise money for the program. Tickets are one ticket for $5 or five tickets for $20, with the raffle winner earning a cash prize depending on the amount of money raised.
