Family Fun

Families are invited to celebrate the Indian Festival of Lights at the Old Jail Art Center’s free family festival this Saturday, Nov. 6, from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m.
This is the Old Jail’s first indoor family festival since COVID restrictions first affected museum activities well over a year ago.
“We are excited about the family festival and having families back inside the museum,” said Susan Montgomery, Development and Membership Coordinator for the OJAC.
Visitors can try traditional food, art, and games celebrating the ancient Hindu festival that is observed in Indian culture every autumn. They can also get a henna tattoo, play “pin the flame on the Diya lamp,” and take a swing at the “Rangoli” piñata.
Diwali, also known as the “festival of lights,” spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair.
“We hope the community will join us at the Old Jail Art Center this weekend, as we explore the food, music and decorations of the brightest Indian holiday,” Montgomery said. “Bring the whole family.”
It is expected that, weather permitting, some festivities such as the piñata, will be held outside on the grounds of the museum. The rest of the activities will be in the Stasney Center for Education.
Those with questions can contact the OJAC education department at 325-762-2936.
