Two Albany natives were recognized as “Albany Stars” at a special awards presentation last Thursday at the Aztec Theater, with a reception following that featured a smorgasbord of foods provided by area business that are members of the Chamber of Commerce,

Named as “stars” for their service, devotion and leadership were oilman Jon Rex Jones and food caterer Treca Edington.

The Chamber first honored local “stars” two years ago at what will be a biennial ceremony that alternates with a gala in the odd-numbered years, according to Chamber executive director Mary Beth Jones.

This year’s recipients were selected from a long list of nominees by a special committee that traditionally picks one business person and one individual.

“This year, the committee felt that both of our recipients qualified both ways,” Jones said. “So we aren’t designating our ‘stars’ one way or the other. They both have done so much for this community through their businesses and individually that it can’t be separated.”

Edington, a 1972 Albany High graduate, was noted for her many years of participation in the Fort Griffin Fandangle, especially as a sidesaddle lady. She was also honored for the businesses that she has started and the people she has employed, including her current endeavor – TE Catering.

Her support and devotion to the residents of Albany were also praised, which included a wide range of methods from donations of money or food, to team dinners, weddings, reunions, and funerals.

Also honored was John Rex Jones, a 1953 graduate of AHS.

Jones, along with his family, operated a very successful oil and gas business, serving in a number of capacities on industry boards and organizations.

His dedication to the Old Jail Art Center and the Ben Richey Boys Ranch was also noted, as well his long tenure as the choir director at First Christian Church, serving as mayor of Albany, creator of a local foundation to fund worthy projects and a long list of causes and organizations deserving of support.

One local group that he has worked to stay a part of throughout his life is the Fort Griffin Fandangle, serving in almost every capacity.

Both Edington and Jones were aptly called two of Albany’s biggest cheerleaders during the presentation.

“I was so happy that we were able to surprise both of them,” Mary Beth Jones said. “Everyone agreed that both of them are two of Albany’s brightest stars.”

The Chamber manager added that Chamber members that are associated with the food business provided a wide array of finger foods and desserts.

“The food was fabulous and provided by our food businesses who are members. They proved that there is no reason to go out of town for a party or event – we have got it all right here at home.”
