With COVID making its mark on several major livestock shows, local students have been preparing themselves and their pigs by attending jackpot shows.

Albany High School senior Carli Edgar brought home a Senior Showmanship award from the Lonestar Classic in Abilene in November.

Edgar placed first in several other categories along with her siblings who also participated in the Lonestar Classic, which is a jackpot show that draws hundreds of pigs from around the state.

The Edgar family, including Callan Edgar, Tatum Grady, and Colter Edgar, took eight pigs to the Abilene show and came away with four first place awards, three second place awards and one third place award.

The family also participated in the Eastland Grand Finale series jackpot show on Dec. 13.

Grady won Overall Grand Champion at the competition with one of seven pigs shown by her siblings, and the family earned three first place, two second place, and one fourth place award.

“This year, with all of the uncertainty of shows due to COVID, we decided to register for more jackpot shows,” Chris Edgar said. “These shows give the kids an opportunity to show their animals and hit their target.”

Edgar said they have plans to attend the Texas National Stock Show in Wichita Falls, which is a show scheduled to replace the national show that was cancelled in Denver.

One other jackpot show on the schedule is The Alternative being held in Fort Worth.

“The Alternative is a show that came together after Fort Worth cancelled its show,” said Edgar. “Basically, a lot of pig people came together and got sponsors and arranged for a show at the same time and place that the Fort Worth Stock Show would normally have been held.”

Aside from the remaining two jackpot shows on their schedule, county students are ready to show in the local show, as well as the major shows that are still in place for the season.
