Dog trials held at local ranch

Albany News

Several weeks ago, 19 dogs from Texas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska came to the Crooked Tree Ranch outside of Albany to compete for the title of “2019 Region 7 AFTCA  Amateur-All Age Champion.”

Judges for the event were Dr. Alex Jacocks of Edmond, Oklahoma and Scoot Terrell of Canton.

“Both men have been involved in bird dog trials for many years and are knowledgeable in the ways of pointing dogs and wild quail,” said show secretary Mary Ann Gustafson. “The weather was perfect, and despite the lack of spring rain, quail were there to be found.”

The M. G. Perkins Amateur All-Age Derby Classic followed the Championship. Eight dogs competed in the stake.

“It’s become a tradition for the ‘Judges’ Dinner’ to be held at the Ice House in Albany,” said Gustafson. “The restaurant offers great food and prompt, friendly service.”

This is the fourth year the championship has been held at the Crooked Tree Ranch.

“Region 7 can’t thank Glenn and Tracy Hughes enough for their warm hospitality in allowing the championship to be held on their beautiful ranch,” Gustafson said. “We were very happy with the number of entries we received, and everyone had a great time. I’m sure we’ll be back next year.”
