The Albany community garden has been tilled and is ready for planting, according to Ramby Anderson, who has helped coordinate the project for several years.

The garden, which began five years ago, is located behind King & Robertson Insurance on Main Street and is open to the public. Anderson said he would like to get more youth involved in the project.

“Things are moving right along, and we were glad to have rain this week,” Anderson said Monday, March 21. “Anyone interested in doing some planting can contact me. We do have some space available.”

Anderson commented that onions, tomatoes, squash, okra, and peppers have been popular plants grown in the garden by past growers.

“I’d really like for more people to plant flowers so we can have more pollinators,” he said.

Anderson said gardeners have several weeks to get seeds in the ground.

“Unless they’re cooler weather vegetables, most plants don’t take off until the ground temperature warms up in the middle of May,” he said. “We have plenty of time.”

With rows planted between concrete footings of a building once located on the site, the garden was the brainchild of late Albany mayor Rodney Alexander.
