Deadline nears for veteran names

Memorial Day is a time to remember those who have served our country, and anyone who wants to honor a local veteran by adding their name to the Shackelford County veterans memorial marker should contact Mary Kay O’Connor at 325-660-2498 by tomorrow, May 10.

O’Connor is hopeful that if the names are turned in by Friday, the monument can have the new names engraved before the Memorial Day celebration on May 27.

Veterans do not have to be deceased, nor do they have to have served in a war to be included on the memorial marker.

O’Connor will need the veteran’s name the way it will appear on the marker, as well as proof of service.

The cost of engraving each name is currently $65.

“If money is preventing someone from adding a name, we have a handful of scholarships available,” she said. “Call to see if you qualify.”

The Albany Lions Club will sponsor a Memorial Day service at the Aztec Theater at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, May 27.

Lions Club member Sandi Conway said that the service will include patriotic songs, a color guard, a speaker, and taps. Refreshments will be available after the service.

“We want to invite all veterans to come,” said Conway.
