Day Camp underway with strong attendance

ResourceCare’s annual Summer Day Camp is off to a smooth start, with more than 100 children registered and daily attendance averaging around 80, according to camp co-director Mindy Ary.

“Everything on the first few days went even smoother than expected, and the cooler weather helped too,” Ary said. “We’re really pleased with how it all came together.”

The two-week camp, sponsored by the Shackelford County Resource Center, runs weekdays through July 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Albany Youth Center, Webb City Park and surrounding facilities. The program serves children ages 3 through sixth grade and offers a full schedule of activities including swimming, sports, arts and crafts, and dancing.

Ary said younger age groups were initially eliminated due to staffing shortages, but late staff additions allowed organizers to open the camp back up to Pre-K and kindergarten children.

“We were glad to be able to add those younger kids back in once we had enough staff to meet the ratios,” Ary said.

This year’s camp also benefits from the addition of Albany ISD’s new art teacher, Jerusha Lang Cholka, who is leading the camp’s expanded art program.

“She’s going to be a big asset,” Ary said. “She’s in charge of the art and is doing a lot with the kids.”

Camp organizers remind parents to send children with swimsuits and towels each day, except Mondays when the pool is closed. Life jackets and goggles are allowed but must be clearly labeled. All campers should arrive wearing regular clothes over their swimsuits to simplify changing.

Ary emphasized the importance of labeling all personal belongings, including clothing, towels, life jackets and goggles.

“We’re not responsible for lost items, so it really helps when everything is clearly marked,” she said.

A light breakfast snack, full lunch and afternoon snack are provided daily through a summer food grant. Outside food and drinks are not permitted. Campers are also asked to leave toys, cell phones and other electronics at home.

Donations of sunscreen and monetary contributions are still welcome. Items can be dropped off at the Shackelford County Resource Center or mailed to ResourceCare, ATTN: Day Camp, P.O. Box 2435, Albany, TX 76430.
