Day Camp to end Friday

ResourceCare’s Summer Day Camp is winding down, with only two days of activities left of the three week schedule.

So far this week the campers have gotten their camp T-shirts, gone to the Old Jail Art Center, enjoyed snow cones, played Bingo for prizes, and watched a children’s movie at the Aztec Theater, according to program director Mindy Ary.

Today the children will venture to the City Park, The Feed Store, and the Shackelford County Courthouse, added Resource Care worker Makenzie Marshall.

“Friday we will stay at the Youth Center and the City Park for swimming and games like kick-ball, tug-a-war, and an obstacle course,” Marshall said. “Day camp has been going well!”

Record attendance numbers have been set again this year.

“We have had an average of 110 campers per day, which is a record for us,” said Ary on Tuesday afternoon. “We have not been below 100 students on any day so far this year.”

The day camp has been held annually since 1998, when 15 kids participated in the program designed to help reduce the youth crime rate in Albany during the summer months by providing students with a safe place, nutritious food, structured activities, and educational experiences during part of their summer vacation.

This year the camp started on Monday, July 9 and will it continue from 8:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. through tomorrow, July 27.

Additional children are welcome to register for the free camp and join in the final two days’ activities.

The Summer Food Program for Children sponsored by the Texas Department of Human Services is part of the camp and was available during the three-week period at the Albany Youth Center.

Children are provided a breakfast snack and a hot meal at lunch time, all served at the Albany Youth Center.

Adult, high school, and junior high students supervise the various activities, and a record number of around 50 staff, both paid and volunteers, helped with the day camp this year.

Donations for the camp are still being accepted. Anyone who would like to contribute to the camp can send tax deductible donations to ResourceCare, PO Box 2435, Albany, TX 76430. Donors should designate that the funding be used for “Day Camp.”
