DAR names Albany, Moran Good Citizens

Albany High School senior Jackson Chapman was recently named as one of the receipients of the Lee’s Legion Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution 2021 DAR Good Citizen Award.
Chapman was one of three area seniors selected by his high school faculty for the honor.
Dariann Hawley was selected to represent Moran High School, along with Liberty Fox from Cisco High School.
The sole student nominated from the senior class should be one who has demonstrated the goood citizenship qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in his or her home, school, and community.
Chapman and Hawley, along with the Cisco nominee, were given the topic, “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It.”
Students then were allowed two hours to complete an essay on the topic in the presence of a faculty member.
The students representing Lee’s Legion presented their essays at a ceremony at Saint Andrew’s Anglican Church in Breckenridge on Wednesday, Dec. 2.
Certificates, money, and DAR pins were presented to the three 2021 DAR Good Citizen Award winners.
The DAR is a non-profit, non-political, volunteer women’s service organization whose members work to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism in their communities.
Albany Winner
Chapman is active at Albany High School and in the community, and plans to attend Texas A&M University and major in agronomy.
Chapman has been elected to the AHS Student Council all four years of high school, as well as serving as a class officer his sophomore, junior, and senior years.
Chapman has been a member of the National Honor Society both his junior and senior year and currently holds the office of reporter.
As an FFA member for four years, Chapman is serving as chapter president this year, and is a member of the Judging and Leadership teams. Chapman also has participated in the Shackelford County Youth & Livestock Show the past two years.
Chapman has been a member of One Act Play all four years, earning All-Star Technical Crew at the bi-district round his freshman year and All-Star Cast at district his junior year.
The senior also has been a member of the Lions Roar school newspaper and was entertainment editor his sophomore year, winning a State Gold Star award. Chapman also received a state nomination for Best Entertainment Feature Story.
Athletically, Chapman has played football all four years of high school and was on the varsity roster his sophomore through senior years, playing on the state semi-final team his sophomore year.
The basketball court also has hosted Chapman as he has played his sophomore through senior years.
Chapman has been on the Albany Lions baseball team all four years. His freshman year, Chapman was District Newcomer of the Year and went with the team to the regional quarterfinals. His sophomore year, Chapman was Defensive Catcher of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year on the state quarterfinal team.
In 2020, Chapman was a member of the 2A Region 1 baseball team that was ranked second in the top 30 teams in the state. The season was cut short due to COVID.
Outside of school, Chapman has been on mission trips to New Orleans and Rockport to help with hurricane relief, and has worked for John Tate at BarDouble R Ranch.
Chapman is the son of Jacob and Tara Chapman.
Moran Winner
Dariann Hawley has participated in volleyball, cheer, basketball, and track all four years at Moran High School.
Hawley went to area in track her freshman year. Her sophomore year, Hawley earned bi-district honorable mention honors and was a member of the playoff team.
While playing basketball her junior year, Hawley earned Academic All-State honors, and she qualified for regional competition in cross country.
Hawley also has volunteered for the Fort Griffin Fandangle, worked at the Albany swimming pool, and for an auto dealership detailing cars.
Her future plans are to attend Texas A&M University and major in neuroscience to become a surgeon.
Hawley is the daughter of Darren Hawley of Moran and Joeann Mead of Baird.
