Presley Green of Albany and Samantha Hinkle of Moran have received the Good Citizen award from the Lee’s Legion Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship.

The award recognizes high school seniors who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their homes, schools, and communities. Students are selected by their teachers and peers because they demonstrate these qualities to an outstanding degree.

Lee’s Legion member Lisa Echols said Green and Hinkle exemplify the four qualities of a good citizen.

“That was shown in the activities they’ve been involved in in high school,” Echols said. “And they had to answer questions about how they were living out those characteristics.”

In her application, Green wrote: “My efforts to serve my community in whatever way I’m able to has filled me with a sense of accomplishment. Volunteering for different organizations and activities within my community  has offered me the opportunity to focus my attention on others in need. It is easy to be self-serving but it is rewarding to serve others. To me, volunteering makes me feel like I am more involved in making my community a better place. The time I spend volunteering reminds me that giving and helping others is a form of human connection that is unbeatable.”

Green serves as president of Albany’s National Honor Society and vice president of the student council. She has also participated in volleyball, basketball, track, and cheer, as well as One-Act Play. She also competes in FFA and UIL contests.

Green plans to attend Texas A&M with a goal of running her own coffee shop.

Hinkle’s background information will appear next week.
