Cub Scouts race at Pinewood Derby
By Sandy Morris
The Albany Cub Scouts annual Pinewood Derby race was held on Monday, Jan. 25 at the Scout Hut with Matthew Key coming out the overall winner.
Cubmaster Jacey Shack and Den Leader Dan Key organized the event with the help of committee chair Terri Lucas.
“All the kids did a fantastic job building their cars,” said Shack. “We saw some different styles of cars that performed really well. We could tell the kids really spent some quality time on their own and with their parents working on the cars.”
Three registered Cub Scouts in the Lion and Tiger Dens were matched against each other, while the Wolf and Bear Dens raced together.
The overall winners were determined among all of the members of the local Cub Scout Pack.
Shack and Key both got in on the racing action and made cars to race.
“We made cars and some of the other parents made their own cars, so when the main race was over, each Scout was able to challenge an adult to race for fun,” said Shack. “I know I lost more races than I won!”
Shack said he and Key would like to get more local kids and their parents involved in both Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts.
“We are working on creating a Facebook page so people can see all of our activities and hopefully want to get involved with the organization,” Shack said.
Final Results
In the overall winner division, Matthew Key won first place and Abigail Key came in second place followed by Jonathan Key in third place.
Winners in the combined Lion and Tiger Dens were 1. Abigail Key, 2. Dylan Cradduck, and 3. Dylan Lively.
Results from the Bear and Wolf Dens were 1. Jonathan Key, 2. Matthew Key, and 3. Jason Shack.
Ribbons were awarded to all places, in addition to participation winners.
Cubmaster Shack said the annual Blue and Gold ceremony has been scheduled for next month.
“We will be holding the event at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 22 at the Scout Hut,” Shack said.
