The number of positive COVID-19 tests is continuing to be steady over the last two weeks as the newer variant of the virus affects local residents.

A total of 14 positive results were reported by county judge Bob Skelton for the period of June 27 through July 8. The two local medical clinics administered a total of 25 tests during the period.

The report states that Trauma Service Area D, which includes hospitals in Abilene and the surround area, reports 12 lab-comfirmed cases requiring hospitalization, with three of those patients requiring ICU beds. There were no reports of pediatric cases requiring hospital care as of Monday.

The latest cases are thought to be the Omicron variant, which is reportedly more contagious than previous strains but has milder symptoms.

Testing continues to be available locally at the Shackelford County Health Clinic and ResourceCare Community Health Center.

The total number of tests or positives does not include any information about tests administered outside Albany or by use of home tests.
