COVID cases increase

Albany News

There were 16 new COVID-19 cases reported last week, based on the tests administered at Albany’s two health clinics, an uptick as the school year neared.

The weekly report by county judge Bob Skelton issued Tuesday reported 16 positive test results out of 19 tests given at the two local clinics for the period of Aug. 8-12, compared with nine cases the previous week.

The use of home testing also increased after tests were made more readily available making it unclear as to the actual number of local cases.

The total number of tests or positives does not include any information about tests administered outside Albany or by use of home tests.

The number of cases requiring hospitalization in Trauma Service Area D, which includes Abilene area hospitals was 24 confirmed COVID-19 patients, compared to 30 the previous week. Two adult patients required ICU care, and there were no pediatric cases.

Hendrick Medical Center raised the risk level a step two weeks ago, which again requires all persons entering the hospitals or other facilities to wear a mask.

The latest cases are thought to be the Omicron variant, which is reportedly more contagious than previous strains but has milder symptoms.

Testing continues to be available locally at the Shackelford County Health Clinic (325-762-3661) and ResourceCare Community Health Center (325-762-2447).

Anyone experiencing COVID-19 symptoms can make an appointment.

Moderna vaccines and boosters are also available by appointment at the local clinics.
