COVID cancels RC Day Camp after just 1 week

ResourceCare’s Day Camp was brought to an early end as a wave of COVID-19 cases last week forced the cancellation of the program’s second week.

“We had a great week, but unfortunately COVID hit,” ResourceCare’s Ragan Riley said. “The second week was going to be a rotation of Vacation Bible School at different churches, but we didn’t want to take kids around the community.”

Riley said a contributing factor was having a number of helpers going out of town this week for church camp.

“We were already short-staffed, so we made the difficult decision to cancel camp to hopefully slow the spread of COVID amongst the campers and staff,” she said. “It was the right decision, but a hard one.”

ResourceCare’s Christina Daugherty said cases first began appearing Wednesday, July 13, the third day of the camp’s projected 10-day run. The decision to curtail the program came Friday, July 15 after other positive results.

“Once we started seeing positives, we began to screen and monitor every camper and staff in the mornings,” Daugherty said. “We sent home anyone with a fever. Due to the number we sent home and the positives that were recorded after that, we chose to close at the end of the day on Friday.”

Daugherty said between five and 10 positive cases were confirmed, mostly among campers with a few among staff.

Daugherty said the increase in cases would not impact any upcoming ResourceCare programs.

“Right now we don’t have any other programs going on,” she said. “Other than CareFest next month, our other programs are in the schools and school hasn’t started yet. I’m sure we’ll continue to roll with those once school starts.”
