Another West Texas Fair and Rodeo in Abilene has come and gone after running from Sept. 4-19, with an extra week added to spread out events this year.

This past Friday and Saturday and last weekend of the fair included several Shackelford County youth participating in the junior steer show and in the youth open swine show.

“The kids did a great job preparing their animals for the shows,” said Chris Beard, FFA advisor. “All the exhibitors represented Shackelford County well during the span of the fair this year.”

Beard said there were 115 classes of steers, and it was a long weekend for both steers and swine, but the local exhibitors came away successful.

Kenzie Neve placed first in class 42 Shorthorn and came back to claim Grand Champion Shorthorn honors with her steer.

Callan Edgar placed first in class 19 Yorkshire and came back to win overall Reserve Grand Swine.

Edgar’s sister, Carli Edgar, also took first with her class 15 Hampshire and then claimed Reserve Champion honors.

Other results from the livestock show are listed below.

Tag Orders

Beard said the last day to turn in tag order forms for fall heifer validation and swine are Thursday, Sept. 24, and the orders must be paid by Friday, Sept. 25.

“If the tags are not paid, they will not be ordered,” Beard reported.

Tags for both animals are $15 each.

According to the Shackelford County Youth and Livestock Show and all major show rules, if a exhibitor plans to show a barrow and gilt at a major show, a state tag must be ordered for each barrow and gilt that will be shown.

If an exhibitor shows a gilt at the county show only, just a county tag is needed.

Rabbit and Chickens

Thursday, Sept. 24 is also the last day to turn in rabbit and chicken order forms.

Beard explained that rabbits range from $30 to $50. They can be ordered from him, or exhibitors can order them on their own.

Rabbits will be validated on or before Dec. 15.

Beard said show chicken orders are due as well for the county show. Chickens run $1.60 each.
