County votes strongly Republican
By Melinda L. Lucas
A large turnout of Shackelford County voters, very close to the 2018 record for a midterm election and representing more than 53 percent of registered voters, showed overwhelming support for Republican candidates in state offices.
There was a huge gap in all races, with Republicans earning as much as 90 to 93 percent of the local vote in many areas.
Statewide percentages were much closer in most races.
All county and district candidates ran unopposed, although some had opposition in the March primary.
Voters may have noticed that all unopposed candidates, including the state senator and state representative, were “declared elected” in a section at the end of the ballot.
According to a new state law, unopposed candidates are not in the regular “line-up” in order to streamline the ballot.
A total of 1,242 local voters cast ballots on Tuesday or during early voting, representing 53.51 percent of the 2,231 registered voters countywide. This compares with 1,294 voters in the midterm election in 2018.
