All Shackelford County veterans and their guests are invited to join local students for a Veterans Day celebration on Friday, Nov. 11 at the Nancy Smith Elementary cafeteria.

The program will start at 9:00 a.m.

Several patriotic songs will be presented by music students in grades 2-4. according to music teacher Danna Vaughan.

About 100 invitations have been sent to local veterans, but all veterans are urged to attend the celebration even if they did not receive an invitation.

“We updated the list the best we could again this year,” elementary counselor Susie Beard said. “There were just over 100 names, even after adjusting the list for deceased veterans this year.”

She added that the spouses of all deceased veterans are also invited to attend and should have been included on the list.

The school will have a registration book at the front of the cafeteria for anyone left off the list or addresses to be updated.

The Sixth Grade Leadership Team will assist principal John Gallagher in conducting the ceremony.

Each class in grades 2-4 will present a song, including “My Country Tis of Thee” by the second graders, “On Veteran’s Day” by the third grade, and “This Land is Your Land” by the fourth grade.

The three groups will combine to sing “This is America.”

Gallagher said that each branch of the service will be recognized during the program.

Refreshments will be served following the program for veterans and their guests.
