County IT needs reviewed

Shackelford County elected officials looked at Information Technology (IT) suggestions for the upcoming fiscal year in an afternoon meeting on Monday, Aug. 13 that ended with an hour-long budget workshop.

Commissioners also discussed a contract with Callahan County for inmate housing.

Technology Needs

Sam Goldsmith, the county’s IT consultant, presented several different items on Monday’s agenda, updating the commissioners about ongoing issues and giving them a list of needs that need to be addressed in the near future.

The commissioners authorized Goldsmith to coordinate with county attorney Colton Johnson to send an official letter to AT&T backing up the county’s billing issue with the company.

A strategy for fiscal year 2018-2019, when many of the county’s computers will need to be replaced and updated, was detailed, centering around the fact that Windows 7 is no longer being supported.

Goldsmith also reviewed the Courthouse’s data cabling issues and a critical need for secure off-site backup of all devices in case of server failure or physical disaster.

No action was taken.

Jail Contract

Although a system has recently been developed to bill Callahan County for the contracted 10 beds at the LEC, even if the beds are not occupied, there were a number of months when Callahan County was only billed for beds that were occupied.

The commissioners decided they would like to reach some kind of agreement with Callahan officials rather than demanding payment.

The item will be placed on the next agenda.

Courthouse Repair

It was reported that major repairs to the Courthouse will not be completed until sometime in October, although contractor Alan Odom of Premier Metalwerks had initially thought he would be finished this month.

Currently, the staircases are being stabilized and work on the roof is ongoing.

Other Business

•Fullerton CPA was engaged to perform the county’s 2017 audit at a cost of $15,500.

•The burn ban will continue to be in effect.

•It was reported that the weigh station is complete.
