The 2020 Census for Shackelford County, and all of the United States, is facing challenges that puts everyone at risk for an undercount.

Currently, Shackelford County’s response rate is 26.2 percent.

According to the census bureau, this is one of the lowest percentages in Congressional District 60.

The response rate for the entire state is below 50 percent, ranking 38th in the nation.

“We need a complete and accurate count to receive all the funding we are eligible for,” said Vickie Kubiak, census enumerator for Shackelford County.

Census results can change the future of a community. The data informs how billions of dollars in federal funds are distributed and affects representation in Congress. The once-a-decade count can have a major impact on Shackelford County.

Starting this week, the bureau will begin sending reminder notice postcards to households that have not yet responded.

“We have currently ceased operations in the field due to COVID-19,” Kubiak said. “The plan is to be back out there as soon as we are released. In the meantime, residents are encouraged to respond online.”

The deadline to self respond has been extended to Oct. 31. Citizens can go online to complete at my2020census.gov, or call 1-844-330-2020.
