A contract for the county’s quarterly pest control, as well as a provider for fuel and mowing, was decided at Monday’s regular meeting of the Shackelford County commissioners on Sept. 14.

Liberty Pest Control was the only local submission out of three bids, and at $319.97, was just a few dollars higher than the low bid of $310 per quarter.

“I’d rather give the contract to someone local if we can,” said Precinct 1 commissioner Steve Riley.

The one-year contract was unanimously approved on a motion by Lanham Martin.

The company will provide pest control for the Courthouse, JP office, and Law Enforcement Center.

Lion Fuels submitted the only bid for the county’s fuel needs, and Texas Grass Shall Grow was the sole bidder for lawn care at both the Courthouse and two rural cemeteries.

Sex Offender Links

Ragan Riley asked the county officials to consider adding information on the county’s website that would help local residents keep track of convicted sex offenders.

“It is everyone’s responsibility to stop child sexual abuse, and I think education and making the public aware is a great start,” said Riley. “You already have a lot of links on your website, and I’m asking that you include another that will give parents and others insight about sex offenders who live here.”

She said that finding an address, photograph, and convictions for sex offenders should be easy, but she hadn’t been able to find a site that had all that information in one place.

The commissioners agreed to add a link or links to the county site, but they instructed county judge Robert Skelton to ask the Texas Association of Counties, which maintains the website, if there is a recommended link.

Other Business

•A meeting scheduled for Sept. 21 was cancelled, with plans to adopt the budget and tax rate at the regular meeting on Sept. 28.

•Skelton reported that the expansion tank or the hot water boiler for the courthouse heating system needs to be replaced, and although he didn’t have any quotes, he expects it to “be expensive.”
