County 4-Hers enter state archery contest

Local 4-H Club members recently participated in the state archery competition at the Young County Arena in Graham on Friday and Saturday, April 2-3, according to Shackelford County extension agent and 4-H sponsor Kloey Painter. 

Archery team members who competed include Johnnie Hise, Ellis Hise, James Hise, Emmie Hise, and Carly Kreitler. 

4-H Sewing Clinic

Local 4-H members will meet at the Shackelford County Courthouse at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 11 for a sewing clinic. 

Members will travel to JoAnn’s Fabrics in Abilene for a fashion scavenger hunt and to pick up materials for the 4-H Fashion Show in July.

4-H Horse Clinic

The 4-H horse clinics will continue on Saturday, April 24, when the focus will be on teaching members the basics of horse polo.

This clinic will be conducted “on-horse” beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the Lazy 3 Ranch, and horses will be provided.

Ear Tag Deadlines

Steer and heifer ear tag orders for major shows need to be turned in to Albany High School ag teacher Chris Beard or to Painter by Friday, April 16. 

Cost for steers is $20 with validations in June for fall 2021 and spring 2022 shows.

Heifer tags cost $15 with summer validations also in June for fall 2021 and spring 2022 shows.

Fall heifer validation will be done in October for spring shows. 

April 16 is also the deadline to turn in tag orders for swine, lambs, and goats for the State Fair of Texas and the Heart of Texas shows.

Crossbred gilts showing at the State Fair of Texas and Heart of Texas must now be tagged and validated. 

Cost for all swine, lambs, and goats is $15 and new tags will be ordered in September for the 2022 county and major shows with validations in October.
