Competitors place in UIL meet
By Sandy Morris
Albany High School students competed in the virtual Haskell Pow Wow, a University Interscholastic League academic invitational meet, on Saturday, Jan. 16, and several Albany students brought home individual medals.
In addition, Albany students placed first in journalism and science as a team.
“I am very encouraged for our students and am looking forward to more UIL competition as we figure it out,” Rick Davis, UIL coordinator said. “At the moment, I don’t know if we will be able to get another tournament in before district. The usual tournaments that we attend are not scheduled.”
This first meet was held virtually due to COVID concerns, so students spent the majority of last week preparing their various assignments for submission.
Rankings
The meet was not ranked by school as it has been in the past.
“In the science competition, they recognize who had the top score in biology, chemistry, and physics, which are the three topics covered by the science event,” said Davis. “Luke Ivy had the top chemistry individual score and top score overall, and we had the top science team overall.”
Individual Winners
Senior Tana Thompson did well in her events, placing first in editorial writing, second in headline writing and sixth in news writing.
Ty Everitt placed fourth and Sarah Cotter placed fifth in news writing and Paige Picquet placed sixth in ready writing.
Hannah Trail placed third and Luke Ivy placed fifth in editorial writing.
Ashley Richards was first in headline writing, which rounded up enough points for the Albany journalism team to win first place with 76 points.
Jim Ned placed second in journalism with 63 points.
In the mathematics division, Hannah Trail placed fifth and Luke Ivy placed sixth.
Ivy’s first place in science, along with Sidney Bartee in sixth put that team in first place.
William Webb tied for first place in current issues and events.
Davis said a total of 18 students competed in various events for the Haskell meet.
Besides those listed above, others were Morgan Garcia, Carli Edgar, Clara Holson, Jaden Bean, Corbin Roberts, Brooks Neece, Taren Farmer, Michael Sadler, Mayson Garcia, Leddie Leech, Tyler Chapman, Susie Cormack, Chelsi Parsons, and Jaci Chapman.
Upcoming Events
Davis is searching for other virtual meets prior to district because the usual tournaments Albany attends are not scheduled.
“At the moment, UIL is telling us to plan for normal competition for district and beyond,” said Davis. “I do know they are looking at options in case we do have to go virtual.”
The district meet is scheduled for Wednesday, March 24 in Stamford.
