Competitions keep students busy

Local 4-H and FFA members are in the middle of competitions and validations as they move closer to stock show season. 

4-H Shooting Sports

The Shackelford County 4 –H Club will be hosting a shooting sports meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at 5:45 p.m. at the First Christian Church. 

Shackelford County Extension Agent Kloey Painter said all of the shooting sports options will be discussed at the meeting.

“We will introduce coaches and go over important information for the shooting sports season,” said Painter.

District Food Show

A total of eight 4-H members will be competing at the district food show at the fairgrounds in Abilene today. 

Students competed and placed at the local show to advance to the district show.

Senior 4-H competitors are Johnnie Hise – dessert and Leddie Leech – appetizer. 

Students representing the local 4-H club in the junior division are Artie Bell – Dessert, Carly Kreit-ler – Main Dish, Gage Burton – Side Dish, and Luke Smith – Appetizer.

Intermediate students competing today include Landon Kreitler – Side Dish and Ellis Hise – Main Dish.

In addition, 4-H members sponsored a food drive on Nov. 16 to collect food items for the Resource Center.

Swine Validation

FFA swine validation started Wednesday, Nov. 18 and continues through today, Nov. 19 at the ag farm. Swine projects will be validated at individual homes and farms Nov. 22-24. 

Pigs being exhibited by 4-H members will be validated throughout November with the last day to validate on Sunday, Nov. 22, according to Painter.
