Community-led parade set Dec. 5

Last week, the Albany Chamber of Commerce made the difficult decision to cancel the annual Lighted Christmas Parade, along with all of the associated festivities, due to concerns over the increase in area COVID-19 cases.

However, local resident Mackenzie Viertel is organizing an independent, totally volunteer-based community Christmas parade in order to carry on a favorite holiday tradition.

“As a citizen of Albany, I can completely understand the decision of the Chamber officers to cancel the Christmas parade,” said Viertel. “As a citizen of Albany, I also understand the importance of the tradition of the Christmas parade.”

The parade is scheduled for this Saturday, Dec. 5 with live music performed by Matt Stapp beginning at 5:30 p.m. on the corner of South 1st and Main Street by First National Bank.

“I’ve already had a fairly good response from the community,” said Viertel. “Even though this is kind of last minute, we expect a good turnout and will be handing out first, second, and third place awards.”

Parade lineup will begin at the First Baptist Church from 5:00 to 5:30 p.m. with the parade beginning around 6:15 p.m.

Viertel said a brief singing of Christmas carols will follow the parade at the Bank Park.

Citizens or businesses wishing to participate in the parade can contact Viertel at 806-470-2879.
