Commodity delivery delayed 1 week

Certified eligible families in Moran should pick up their December commodity food this Thursday, Dec. 13, at the Moran City Hall between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon.

Delivery to Moran, originally scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 6, was postponed due to wet weather.

“They called from Albany and said that it was raining, and they couldn’t deliver,” said Moran city manager Jackie Wallace. “I was surprised, because it wasn’t raining in Moran. But about that time we started getting some rain also.”

Although there was no official rainfall in Albany last Thursday, Texas showers can be very localized, and this one was sitting over the delivery route.

The commodities are transported from the JP’s office to Moran bagged in paper sacks, and carried in the back of a pickup.

“If they try to deliver when it is wet out, the bags get damp, and the canned food rips its way out,” Wallace said. “It works better to just reschedule.”

Recipients who are unable to pick up their food can send a signed and dated note with someone to pick up their commodities for them, rather than letting the items go unclaimed.

The commodity food program is federally funded and works to improve the health of low-income and elderly people at least 60 years of age by supplementing their diets with nutritious USDA commodity foods. Applications for the program are available at the JP office.
