Commissioners discuss show barn proposal
The Shackelford County Commissioners Court met Monday morning, April 28, with a agenda that included discussions on the county show barn, a permit approval for a wastewater project, and routine reports.
No action was taken regarding a burn ban after commissioners agreed conditions did not warrant one.
Representatives from the Shackelford County Youth Livestock Association attended the meeting to discuss a potential plan for expanded use and management of the county show barn. The group outlined ideas for hosting more events to increase community involvement and generate revenue, modeling their management concept after the Aztec Theater, where operations are handled by a nonprofit board while the city maintains insurance. Part of the discussion included allowing traveling show families to rent space at the show barn between events or while passing through the area, a practice members of the association said they have received requests for in the past. Commissioners responded favorably to the idea but emphasized the need for a formal proposal outlining responsibilities, insurance coverage, financial arrangements, and other details before any decision could be made. County Judge John Viertel asked the group to prepare a detailed plan to be reviewed at a future meeting.
Later in the session, commissioners approved a development permit application for rehabilitation work at the Moran Wastewater Treatment Plant. The project, located northeast of Moran, will move forward after a motion by Commissioner Cody Jordan and a second by Commissioner Ace Reames. The vote was unanimous.
The court also unanimously recognized the public proclamation of Texas Soil and Water Stewardship Week, which runs from April 27 to May 4.
An expected agreement with FiberLight regarding an easement at the Law Enforcement Center had not yet been submitted, so no action was taken. Likewise, the Treasurer’s report was tabled until the next meeting.
County Judge Viertel also mentioned that tree trimming work at the courthouse is scheduled to begin in mid-May, and that a dedication ceremony for the Alamo Letter plaque will take place at the courthouse on the final Saturday of the Fort Griffin Fandangle.
