Classic Car Show moved to May 10

By Melinda L. Lucas

Albany’s Classic Car Show was one of several casualties of severe weather over the weekend, with the event cancelled well in advance so that participants and visitors could adjust their plans.

Robert Snyder, who organizes the annual show, made the call on Thursday afternoon, April 17, citing that chances of rain on Saturday were forecast at over 90%.

And as it turned out, Albany saw rain on Friday night and another four inches or so starting Saturday afternoon, with some thunder and lightning mixed in for good measure.

The car show had an original rainout date of May 17, but Snyder said this week that plans have been backed up to Saturday, May 10 in order not to conflict with a couple of other area car shows.

Organizers hope to see plenty of classic cars parked around the Bank Park that weekend.

“We will still host a Burger Burn fundraiser and the Burnout on Friday evening, May 9, with the show set to start at 8:00 a.m. the next morning,” Snyder said.

The show is open to all classics, antiques, hot rods, customs, trucks, and more.

Several food vendors are expected to set up at the Bank Park during the day on May 10.

Snyder is actively seeking donations to help with the expenses of the event.

His call to local farmers and ranchers in last week’s paper to help “guarantee” a rain event has resulted in at least one contribution.

Snyder commented in the April 17th edition that “we think we should start getting donations from farmers and ranchers around here, because we can pretty well guarantee that we’re going to get rain for the car show weekend. If enough farmers and ranchers donate, we can build a dome downtown, and everybody will be happy.”

He reminded one friend this week of that remark and a little while later had a check in hand.

“We are encouraging all our farmers and ranchers to donate if they want more rain on May 10,” Snyder said, “and we are still waiting for some of them to pay up for the last rain installment.”

“If it rains again, just get prepared, because we’re going to move the show to August. It never rains then,” Snyder said. “Get your short-sleeved shirts and sun screen ready.”
