Albany’s city council met in special session on Monday night, Aug. 21 to propose a tax rate, electing to go with the “No New Revenue” (NNR) rate of 56.39 cents.

The NNR rate is calculated to produce the same amount of taxes if applied to the same properties taxed the previous year, and is actually lower than last year’s rate of 61.04 cents and the previous year’s rate of 67.55 cents because of increasingly higher property values within the city limits.

It is calculated to generate $611,022 and is expected to be adopted at the next regular meeting on Sept. 11 after the required notice is published.

The motion was made by Lester Galbreath, seconded by Austin Sherwood, and passed unanimously.

Also on the special agenda was the distribution of  about 20%, or $99,000, of the city’s state and local recovery funds to full-time and part-time employees hired before April 2023 who worked during COVID until the present time, not including the city manager.
