Albany News

All five members of the Albany City Council met in closed session for 45 minutes at the end of Monday’s regular monthly meeting for the annual evaluation of city manager Billy Holson, but there was no action when the session was reopened to the public.

Prior to that, there were only a couple of routine items reviewed on the regular agenda, with the open part of the meeting lasting only about 20 minutes.

Financial Overview

Holson noted there are several line items in the budget that will need to be amended before the end of the city’s fiscal year, many of those having to do with higher expenses and unexpected repairs at the water plant.

He also pointed out a $12,000 expenditure for trees at the park, paid by special donations, that will need to be adjusted in both revenue and expenses.

Overall, he said, expenses for the year are about $116,000 “in the red” compared with a $125,000 deficit at the same time last year.

Holson expects to end the year in March 2019 within the budget parameters.

The city manager also reported that the water storage tank on One Mile Hill had recently been damaged by lightning and it is “not synchronizing with the water plant.”

Hotel/Motel Budget

A budget of $22,000 recommended by the Hotel/Motel Board was approved, with $9,000 allocated to the Chamber, $6,000 to the Fandangle, $1,000 to the Aztec, $2,000 to Friends of Fort Griffin, and $2,000 to the Old Jail Art Center.
